The Lore of Hikari Goma
The Land of the Rising Sun has long been celebrated for its mastery of many crafts. From steel folded into unyielding blades to joinery so precise it requires no nails, Japanese artisans have elevated technique into timeless tradition. Among these revered arts is Kumiko woodworking — the patient, intricate assembly of wooden pieces into lattices that rely solely on balance and precision.
What makes Kumiko truly special is not only the skill it demands, but the meaning woven into its patterns. Each design carries symbolism, a story told through geometry. Of them all, one stood out to us: the Goma lattice. Derived from the humble sesame seed, it represents resilience and quiet strength — qualities that echo the Jedi, where the smallest spark of light is able to stand against the darkness.
It is with this ancient motif as our inspiration that we sought to forge a truly enduring Arclyte. To give the Goma lattice the space to fully unfold, we pared back the grip’s knurling, creating a sufficiently large ‘panel’ where its geometry could flow without restraint. The section was then powder coated in a warm, wood-like hue — a subtle homage to the craft from which it was born.
That same hue reappears at the emitter, applied only to select bands in a deliberate rhythm that brings balance to the design. Just above the pommel, the lattice returns once more, echoing the grip’s pattern but now rendered in a darkened shade to match the rest of the saber hilt. Together with the remaining bands left in black anodize, the contrast of tones reflects the spirit of the lattice itself — distinct elements brought together in harmony.
Every detail on this lightsaber carries intention, and its name is no different. We call it Hikari Goma (光胡麻), the Seed of Light.
